As summer approaches, one of our favorite ways to spend time together is at the pool. There isn’t much more than you need other than a swimsuit, some water, and a bunch of laughs. However, this guide will ensure your family has everything you need for epic family pool fun this summer.
Family Pool Fun Toys
We have little kids, so it’s essential that we bring something to keep them entertained. These toys are all small enough to fit in your pool bag, but sure to provide big fun.
1. Reusable Water Balloons
Have more fun with less waste with these reusable, fillable water balloons. We like this brand versus some others because the magnets are enclosed, so they don’t fall out and cause choking concerns for small children.
2. Diving Gems
Our kids love these and will play with them for hours. They are easy to see in the water, but small enough to feel like real treasure.
3. Light-up Beach Balls
If you are swimming in the evening or at night, these LED light-up beach balls are a great addition to the pool party. They have eight color modes, are waterproof, and are made with non-toxic PVV plastic.
Towels
When kids get out of the water, they need a quick solution to dry off. Also, as parents, we want to make sure they are plenty dry before they ride in the car or take off running through the house. These towels will make sure both your kids and your stuff stays dry.
4. Quick Dry Turkish Towels
We love these because they are thinner than your average beach towel, so they are easy to pack. They also dry quickly, which is helpful for kids who are constantly in and out of the water and still want a dry towel. This set has different colors, ensuring that your kids’ towels won’t get mixed up.
5. Toweling Dress
This girls toweling dress from Boden keeps your child dry while looking cute. Plus, you don’t have to worry about her dragging a towel around or dropping it in the pool.
6. Hooded Beach Towel
This hooded baby beach towel from Zappos gives us all the hippie vibes. Break out the hacky sack and put on some Grateful Dead, and your baby will be groovin’ in no time.
Family Pool Fun Floats
Be the hit of the pool with a stylish float. Better yet, buy a few so your kids won’t argue over them!
7. Urban Outfitters Strawberry
This strawberry float from Urban Outfitters will make sure you have a sweet time lounging by the pool. It’s plenty big enough for dad or multiple kids.
8. Bomb Popsicle Float
This lounging float from Macy’s is shaped like the classic bomb pop and is perfect for those U.S. holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.
9. Alligator Float with Cooler and Drink Holders
Upgrade the classic gator float with space for drinks and cupholders. Make it kid-friendly by putting juice boxes in the cooler and water in the cups for “water pong.” A great way to have them stay hydrated in the sun!
Sunscreen
Protecting your family’s skin from harmful UV rays is essential. Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher before heading to the pool. Remember to reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating. Don’t forget those easily forgotten areas like ears, neck, and the back of the knees.
10. Whipped Sunscreen
Your kids won’t hate you for forcing them to wear this fun “whipped” SPF 30 sunscreen. It smoothes on evenly for skin protection and features hydrating coconut oil, aloe vera and banana extract.
11. Sunscreen Stick
We think it’s easier to coat moving faces in SPF when you apply via stick. We like this Blue Lizard sunscreen stick because it’s great for sensitive skin and lasts for up to 80 minutes until you need to re-apply.
Bathing Suits
When it comes to kids bathing suits, there are so many cute ones to pick from! Here are some of our favorites. (PS If you’re looking for swimsuits for mom, check our a previous post here!)

Pool Bag & Cooler
Keep your stuff clean and dry with these nifty totes.
12. Neoprene Bag
This pool bag from SummerSalt has durable handles and is made from water resistant neoprene. It also has tons of room for all of the crap your kids will need at the pool.
14. Cooler Bag
This backpack cooler bag from Amazon has a ton of room inside to keep your drinks and juice boxes cold, but nifty pockets on the outside for your keys and phone. It also comes in several colors, but we are partial to the leopard print.
Family Pool Fun Safety
In addition to having fun and making memories with our family, we also have to make sure we are staying safe. Here are our tips and tricks for staying safe in the sun and the water.
Teach Water Safety
Start the summer season by teaching your children about water safety. Ensure they understand basic swimming skills, including floating and treading water. Teach them about the importance of staying within designated swim areas and avoiding dangerous behaviors, such as running near the pool. Enroll them in swimming lessons if needed and closely supervise young children at all times.
Stay Hydrated
With the sun’s scorching heat, it’s crucial to stay hydrated while enjoying poolside activities. Encourage your family to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Prepare a cooler filled with chilled water bottles or fruit-infused water to keep everyone hydrated and refreshed.
Establish Pool Rules
Set clear pool rules that everyone in the family should follow. These rules may include no diving in shallow areas, no pushing or horseplay, and no swimming alone. Emphasize the importance of respecting others and taking turns on pool equipment or toys. Reinforce these rules regularly to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment.
Buddy System
Implement a buddy system, especially for younger children or weaker swimmers. Encourage family members to pair up and look out for each other in and around the pool. This ensures that everyone has an extra layer of safety and support throughout their swimming adventures.
Keep Safety Equipment Handy
Make sure essential safety equipment is readily available at the poolside. This may include reaching or throwing devices, life jackets, a first aid kit, and a charged phone for emergencies. Familiarize yourself with the location of these items and ensure they are easily accessible at all times.
Regular Breaks and Rest
Spending hours in the water can be exhausting. Encourage your family to take regular breaks to rest and re-energize. Provide shaded areas or umbrellas where everyone can relax, have snacks, and enjoy a breather. It’s an excellent opportunity to engage in other fun activities, such as playing board games or reading poolside.
Be Weather-Wise
Keep an eye on the weather conditions and be prepared to adjust your plans accordingly. If thunder or lightning is present, it’s crucial to clear the pool area immediately and seek shelter indoors until it is safe to resume activities. Stay informed about local weather forecasts and adhere to any pool closure recommendations for everyone’s safety.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your family enjoys a safe and memorable time at the pool this summer. So grab your towels, swimsuits, and a positive attitude, and get ready for endless hours of splashing fun in the sun with your loved ones!
