Time Management for Working Moms: 6 Sanity-Saving Hacks
Let’s be honest: juggling a career, a household, and a family is a lot. Between my product management day job, raising three kids, and taking care of two big dogs (shoutout to George and Weezie for the endless trail of fur and chewed up toys!), I realized something had to give.
If you are desperately searching for realistic time management for working moms, you are not alone. I was burning out trying to do it all, so I made some changes. Here are the boundaries and systems I use that keep the hustle sustainable.
1. Protect Your Focus (The Golden Rule of Time Management for Working Moms)
I now have dedicated times to respond to emails and texts. Just because my phone buzzes doesn’t mean I owe it my immediate attention. Setting specific windows to check messages rather than being constantly available has been a game-changer for my daily productivity.

2. Unplug After Hours
When the workday ends, it actually ends. I turn off my work notifications and refuse to plug back in after hours. Effective time management for working moms isn’t just about getting more done; it’s about protecting the time that belongs to your family and your peace of mind.
3. Let Go of Perfect
I had to let go of having a perfectly clean house. With three kids and two dogs, it’s just never going to happen—and that’s okay. I’ve stopped waiting for my house to look like a magazine cover before inviting friends over. Connection is so much more important than spotless baseboards.
4. Outsource When You Can
If you can swing it, hire a cleaning service. Whether it’s once in a blue moon or a weekly treat, it feels like the ultimate luxury. It means spending less of my weekend scrubbing toilets and more time doing what I actually want to do.
5. Master the Meal Prep
Having a plan saves my evenings. I love utilizing meal delivery services to take the mental load off.

When I do cook, I deliberately make extra. I’ll prep a big batch of ground turkey or extra portions of dinner so I have high-protein leftovers for my lunches or another family dinner.
If the kids turn their noses up at what we’re having? I don’t stress. I always keep emergency backups on hand: chicken nuggets, Annie’s Mac, or tortillas, black beans, and Mexican cheese for a quick quesadilla.
6. Implement “Laundry Fridays”
Mastering time management for working moms often comes down to finding those hidden pockets of time. I work from home on Fridays, so I use the flexibility to multitask. I start washing loads of laundry in the morning, and by the afternoon, I’m folding while listening to a conference call or watching a continuing education video.
The best part? It’s my kids’ responsibility to put their clothes away. Yes, even the three-year-old knows how to do this!
Bonus: 4 Calendar Rules to Protect Your Peace
If you really want to master time management for working moms, you have to manage your calendar aggressively. Here is the exact system I use to manage my calendar each week:
- 1. Block the non-negotiables first. School drop-offs, pick-ups, and executive meetings go in first, and everything else goes around those. I have to work with the time I actually have, instead of wishing it were different.
- 2. Audit first, then plan. I open my calendar and count what is actually mine. Where can I block off some time for deep focus? Then I block that time and decline around it. I wouldn’t cancel an important client meeting, so I don’t cancel on myself either.
- 3. Block your calendar for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. School drop off is easier in the morning if I don’t have to juggle a conference call at the same time. Same with afternoon pick-ups. If you want me, find me before 4pm please!
- 4. Review and reset weekly. Analyze what works, where I’m stressed, and what I want to make better for the next week.
